If you head off-piste on touring skis, a splitboard or snowshoes, you need solid avalanche knowledge and must be able to carry out a companion rescue. In our avalanche courses you learn both directly in the terrain: with experienced mountain guides, in small groups and in the mountains of Uri and Central Switzerland. Depending on your experience, you choose the right starting point. All courses take place from December to March.
The Avalanche Course Compact teaches you the essentials in a single day: reading the avalanche bulletin, assessing terrain and snow surface, and using transceiver, shovel and probe with confidence. In the afternoon we put what you have learned into practice on a short tour. Ideal if a full course weekend does not fit your schedule.
In the Avalanche Course for Beginners you learn the basics of avalanche awareness without any prior knowledge and practise companion rescue until every move comes naturally. We run it in several areas: around Andermatt, in Riemenstalden or on the Klausen Pass. The Avalanche Course Lidernen also covers the fundamentals of avalanche awareness and practical avalanche rescue. Here we stay overnight at the Lidernen Hut at 1,727 m above Lake Lucerne, which you can easily reach by cable car from Riemenstalden. Both basic courses are possible on touring skis, splitboard or snowshoes.
If you already know the basics, the Avalanche Course for Advanced takes you one step further: you train multiple-burial searches and get to know snow profiles, the Compression Test, the Extended Column Test and the Rutschblock test. The advanced course on the Furka Pass leads from Realp to Hotel Tiefenbach. There you practise making decisions in the terrain: assessing the snowpack and avalanche bulletin, choosing your track and route, estimating the risk and applying transceiver rescue at an advanced level. The Furka Pass course is designed for touring skis and splitboards.
Never taken an avalanche course? Then start with a basic course: the beginners’ course or the course at the Lidernen Hut. If time is short, the compact course is the quickest way in. If you already know the basics and tour regularly, an advanced course is the next step. And whatever your level: practise your transceiver search every winter.
