Drytooling Climbing Course – Beginners

Ein Kletterer beim Drytoolen

Energy-saving climbing on steeply overhanging walls, precise standing on the front points of your crampons and a great deal of energy are demanded in drytooling. You climb holistically on rock, with the help of ice tools and crampons, just as you know them from ice climbing. An exciting mixture that prepares you perfectly for the ice climbing season or for demanding combined mountain tours.

After the meet & greet we start with a theoretical introduction to the subject of drytooling. The topics we cover are: equipment knowledge, placement options for the pick in the rock, pulling directions of the ice tools, hand changes, footwork sequences, energy-saving movement, «Figure of Four» and «Figure of Nine», climbing as second and as leader. After the theoretical introduction we look for easy routes on which we can apply what we have learned. More experienced participants can lead climb on request. Otherwise this adventure is climbed in top rope.

FAQ

Drytooling (from English dry and tool) is an alpine climbing sport in which you climb on dry rock with ice climbing tools (axes) and crampons. The sport emerged at the end of the 1990s so that alpinists could train consistently in the valley for demanding mixed climbs and high mountain tours even in winters with little snow and ice.

The day offers an action-packed programme full of practice:
  • Theory: equipment knowledge, hooking techniques (placement of the pick in the rock) and pulling directions.
  • Practice: energy-saving movement, hand changes on the tool as well as special movement sequences such as «Figure of Four» and «Figure of Nine».
  • Climbing: we train above all in safe top-rope (seconding), more experienced participants can also practise leading on request.

Depending on the weather we switch flexibly to optimal crags in the regions of Uri, Basel-Landschaft, Bern or Glarus. Most of the time we use the Exped Tribe drytool garden „Meteoritenwand“, which we developed ourselves.
