Basic course – your start in the world of ice climbing
In 1966 Yvon Chouinard revolutionised the world of ice climbing, thanks to the development of curved picks, which enabled mountaineers to climb ever steeper ice walls using the “piolet traction” technique. The region around Mont Blanc quickly established itself as the development area for the new equipment and as a testing ground for alpine objectives of all difficulties. Sixty years later, ice climbing remains a niche discipline that has become ever more popular among rock climbers and adventure lovers. Because climbing on ice is very varied, intense and above all incredibly good fun.
Ice climbing should be seen as a serious sport that demands a certain amount of experience in alpine terrain and in belay technique. We can only warmly recommend an introduction by a knowledgeable person. During this 1-day ice climbing course you may not learn to climb Icelandic “shrimp” ice, but we will teach you everything you need in order to practise this fascinating sport independently and in complete safety at the ice crag. Get ready for an incredible adventure into the world of frozen water!
