Programme

We meet up and divide the equipment among the participants. After the approach to the selected hut and a short settling in, we start with the ICE module: we are introduced to safe walking technique with crampons. Before long we are all secured on the rope and walking through crevasses and small watercourses. We learn about the various rescue techniques on the glacier and also practise handling ice axe and crampons with an exciting ice axe course.

As the day draws to a close, we enjoy a warming dinner. We look at the stars and once again discuss the techniques and aspects we applied. Sleep tight and see you tomorrow!

The early bird catches the worm! We have a fortifying breakfast and set off for the ROCK module with dreamlike visibility. This is complemented by learning further techniques on the ice. With a short application tour in the area we consolidate the know-how we have learned.

Thanks to the techniques learned, everyone should be able to navigate through the crevassed terrain. After the well-earned summit photo we head gently back to the hut. We eat something delicious and discuss together tomorrow’s final tour, a longer application tour that serves as the crowning glory of the training. An introduction to weather science, map reading and planning techniques rounds off the programme and enables you to undertake easy alpine ascents on your own after this course.

We set off early from the hut and head straight for the chosen summit. The techniques you have learned come in handy here, because moving forward often requires a combination of the techniques from both days (rock and ice).

Once the summit is reached, we walk back to the hut, pack up our equipment and reach the meeting point from day 1 again. Until the next adventure! Afterwards we send you the great photos and videos of your training, so that you keep the beautiful memories of these three days with you forever.

Accommodation

The welcoming Tierberglihütte of the SAC section Baselland sits at 2’795 metres on a spectacular rocky pulpit high above the Gadmertal at the Sustenpass. The modernised accommodation offers mountaineers, ski tourers and alpinists 78 bright beds as well as a breathtaking panorama of the Steingletscher and the majestic Sustenhorn. Because of its immediate proximity to the eternal ice, the hut serves as an ideal training ground for rock and ice tours. The roughly two-hour summer approach from the Umpol car park follows either an alpine-marked path or an eventful via ferrata, while in winter the hut is a popular base camp for ski touring.

FAQ

The ice module gives you the foundation for walking safely on the glacier:

  • Crampon & ice axe technique: correct use of the front points on steep ice as well as correct handling of the ice axe (e.g. in an ice axe course).
  • Rope team on the glacier: how to tie in correctly as a group and navigate crevassed terrain together.
  • Crevasse rescue: practical exercises in rescue techniques, so that in an emergency you can hold a crevasse fall and haul your partner out using a pulley system.

Here we move from bare ice into combined ridge and rock terrain:

  • Climbing in alpine terrain: moving safely through boulder fields and easy rock, often in combination with crampons.
  • Belaying technique on rock: moving on the “short rope” and using natural belay points (e.g. slings over rock spikes).
  • Independent tour planning: introduction to tour preparation, map reading, navigation and basic weather science.

No, no previous experience is required for this beginners’ course. You should, however, be sure-footed on normal mountain hiking trails and ideally have hiked in the mountains before.
