Programme

We meet at the «Grotte De Glace» at the Rhone Glacier and divide the equipment among the participants. We are introduced to safe walking technique with crampons. Before long we are all secured on the rope and walking through crevasses and small watercourses. After about 3 hours of walking we reach our base camp. Once the campsite is set up, we learn about the various rescue techniques on the glacier and practise handling ice axe and crampons with an exciting ice axe course.

As the day draws to a close, we enjoy a warming vegetarian dinner in expedition style. We look at the stars and once again discuss the techniques and aspects we applied. Sleep tight and see you tomorrow!

The early bird catches the worm! We have a fortifying breakfast and set off for today’s application tour with dreamlike visibility. The summit is chosen together with all members, so that we are all at the same level. In optimal conditions, however, we head for the majestic Dammastock summit. At 3630 m it is the highest mountain in the canton of Uri. The view from the ridge is unique and the last, steeper metres are easy to manage even for first-time alpinists. Thanks to the techniques learned, everyone should be able to navigate through the crevassed terrain. After a well-earned summit photo, we head gently back to base camp. As soon as we get there, everything is dismantled before we head back down into the valley. The photos and videos of this incredible micro expedition tour are produced by a professional photographer. That way you can prove to everyone what a truly extraordinary experience you have had.

FAQ

The Rhone Glacier lies at the Furkapass in the far north-east of the canton of Valais, right on the border with Uri. The meeting point for the course is at the historic «Grotte De Glace» at the Rhone Glacier (by the Hotel Belvédère). It is easily reached by car or by PostBus from Andermatt or Oberwald.

It is the source of the Rhone and offers extremely impressive alpine scenery. Thanks to the direct road access at the Furkapass, hours of approach are not needed. The terrain changes quickly from gentle ice surfaces to jagged crevasse zones and raging meltwater streams – the perfect practical training ground.

Unlike classic, hut-based courses, on this 2-day hybrid basic course you spend the night in real expedition style, in tents directly on the glacier. This combines sound alpine training with an intense wilderness adventure under a starry sky.

The programme is extremely practice-oriented:

  • Day 1: meeting point at the Belvédère, distribution of equipment and introduction to walking technique with crampons on bare ice. Walk through crevasse zones to the camp area (approx. 3 hrs), setting up the campsite and then an ice axe course as well as training in rescue techniques.
  • Day 2: deepening of crevasse rescue (pulley system), knot craft, navigation (map reading) and alpine tour planning.

Unlike classic courses, this format simulates the real conditions of a high-mountain expedition (e.g. in the Andes, the Himalaya or Alaska). Here you learn essential skills that simply cannot be trained in SAC huts:

  • Real camp management on ice: you learn how to anchor tents stably on an ice and snow surface in wind and cold and how to secure them against storms.
  • Self-sufficient resource management: without running water and electricity you learn how to handle stoves, how to melt snow efficiently to obtain drinking water and how to manage your energy properly.
  • Handling heavy luggage: you train walking and balancing with a fully packed expedition backpack (12 to 15 kg) in rough, crevassed glacier terrain.
  • Mental toughness & team spirit: getting through a cold night in the tent together welds us into a team and tests your own psychological resilience in harsh conditions.
