Tolle Lernerfahrungen, danke!

Perfect day: the mountain guide Andrey proved to be very skilled and attentive. We climbed the Berlin Wall route on the Guferstock, and it was an excellent debut as a lead on multi-pitch climbs! A unique experience in the Susten Pass area.

I had a wonderful time with Exped Tribe. They organized a rock climbing tour for me on short notice. I am a beginner climber and my guide was great with setting up the route and helping me climb the path safely. It was a lot of fun!

Requirements

Technique

Climbing experience

Experience in rock climbing required. This course serves as a beginners' course in multi-pitch climbing and is aimed at participants who are already leading in sport climbing.

Fitness

Endurance

Fitness for short approaches of up to 2 hrs.

Programme

At the meeting point we share out the equipment and walk to the climbing area intended for our course. When we arrive there, it’s off we go! After the theoretical introduction it’s a matter of practising a lot yourself, under the supervision of an experienced mountain guide. As soon as your fingertips hurt and your energy is slowly used up, the time has come to round off the day with a hut dinner. Anyone who likes can still enjoy the silence of the night and see one or two shooting stars.

We look at more complex topics of multi-pitch climbing, as well as tips and tricks for energy-saving movement on the rock. Among other things we learn the techniques needed to get ourselves to safety from an emergency situation while alpine climbing.

Once again it means practise, practise, practise, in order to apply the techniques learned. At the end of the course everyone will be able to climb multi-pitch routes independently and safely.

FAQ

This course is aimed at climbers who already lead sport climbs and now want to take the step up to multi-pitch routes. It works both as a genuine introduction to multi-pitch climbing and as a refresher for anyone who wants to brush up on their skills in this area.

In multi-pitch climbing you climb routes that are longer than one rope length and are therefore divided into several sections with intermediate belays. Unlike sport climbing at the climbing wall or on single-pitch crags, additional skills come into play here: using half ropes, building and changing belays, and well-thought-out tactics for the whole route.

You should already have rock climbing experience and be confident leading sport climbs. A certain level of basic fitness for short approaches of up to 2 hours is also required. Complete beginners with no previous experience are better off taking our basic rock climbing course before moving on to multi-pitch climbing.

The focus is on the correct use of half ropes and belay devices, the right abseiling technique and building belays. On the second day of the course we go into more complex topics such as energy-saving movement on rock and emergency techniques that allow you to get yourself out of a difficult situation independently if necessary.

On the first day we hike to the climbing area and, after a theoretical introduction, start straight away with practical application under the guidance of an experienced mountain guide or climbing instructor, including our first multi-pitch routes. In the evening we round off the day together with dinner at the hut and under the starry sky. The second day consolidates what you have learned with more complex topics and plenty of practice on the rock.

We run our multi-pitch climbing courses in various Swiss cantons, including Ticino, Uri, Bern and Schwyz. Depending on the course location, we stay in suitable SAC huts such as the Bergseehütte, Sidelenhütte, Albert-Heim-Hütte or Sustlihütte – chosen for the best conditions for the route in question.

The multi-pitch climbing course can be booked with us over a very long period – practically throughout the entire climbing season in the respective region. The snow-free months from spring to autumn are best, when the alpine multi-pitch routes are easily accessible and dry.

The multi-pitch climbing course focuses on well-protected climbing routes of several pitches with clear belay stations – ideal for learning the basics of climbing on big walls. The ridge and alpine climbing course builds on this and also takes you into alpine terrain with changing surfaces such as scree, rock and short snow passages, as well as teaching you how to place removable protection such as cams and nuts. Combining both courses lays the ideal foundation for independent alpine outings.
