Puncak Jaya Climb 4884 m – A fascinating rock pyramid towering in the middle of the Indonesian rainforest

The ascent of Puncak Jaya in Indonesia is considered the most exotic ascent of the Seven Summits, as well as a challenging hiking and climbing expedition. The summit, also known as the Carstensz Pyramid, was named after the Dutch navigator Jan Carstens, who first described it in 1623. The ascent proves to be bureaucratically complicated, as an ascent has to be approved by the army, police and ministries. Thanks to our experts, however, we are able to carry out our expeditions to this destination according to plan.

The adventure on the Puncak Jaya expedition begins on arrival: We land in Denpasar, the capital of the island of Indonesia, Bali, and stay there for a temple and city visit. Another flight takes us to Papua (Timika), where our jungle trekking begins. For about 6 days we hike in the rainforest of Papua, inhabited by the indigenous people called “Dani”. Once we have reached our base camp, the most interesting part of the trip in terms of climbing and mountaineering begins.

The main route to the summit of the Carstensz Pyramid is mostly in the II to IV UIAA climbing grade and is via the north side of the mountain. The route picks out the weaknesses in the wall and runs over cracks and slabs, which occasionally alternate with scree gullies. The subsequent final ridge has several fissures. The first and largest of these crevasses is crossed today on fixed ropes, on a kind of bridge that is familiar from via ferratas in the Alps. This is followed by the exposed ascent of the “Yellow Tower” until we reach the summit. If we are fast enough, we will reach the summit before the daily downpour that spreads across the country. We enjoy the view of the rainforest below us and as far as the neighboring Ngga Pulu peak and its glacier (4862 m).

Ascent of the Puncak Jaya, Indonesia

Hike back to Illaga

We hike back through the rainforest to Illaga before boarding the return flight to Bali. 2 days can be added as a buffer in case bad weather slows down a summit ascent. Once we arrive in Illaqa, we repack our things and fly back to Bali.
