Ski touring on the island of Senja. An arctic adventure in the far north of Norway, between sea descents and fjord landscapes

In the middle of the Arctic waters of northern Norway rises the island of Senja, a true paradise for ski touring enthusiasts. Often referred to as “Norway in miniature”, Senja offers a fascinating mix of rugged mountain peaks, deep fjords and untouched wilderness that becomes a mecca for ski adventurers every winter. The island’s impressive mountain ranges, including the striking peaks of Segla and Breidtinden, promise challenging descents with breathtaking views of the fjords, creating a unique ski touring experience.

A ski touring trip to Senja gives access to a variety of routes suitable for all levels of difficulty. From the gentle ascent of Hesten (556 m) with its panoramic descent to the challenging ascent of Stortinden (1219 m), the highest mountain on Senja, you are sure to find your personal adventure here. We also like to visit tours such as Husfjellet (635 m), which offers a spectacular view over the Mefjord, or Kvænan (784 m), whose summit gives us a 360-degree view of the surrounding fjords and mountains.

Thanks to our experienced mountain guides, we can explore peaks such as Keipen (938 m) or Barden (659 m), both known for their impressive descents down to sea level. These tours epitomize what is special about ski mountaineering on Senja: we strap on our skis in the morning and glide straight down to the coast at the end of the day. Without compromises or shortcuts. 🙂

For those who like it steeper and more technical: the Oksen mountain range in the south of Senja, with peaks such as Store Hesten (770 m) and Spanstinden (1457 m), offer some of the most challenging and rewarding ski tours on the island. These tours combine technically demanding ascents with breathtaking descents and panoramic views over the rugged coastline of Senja. We can also undertake these tours together during the trip. From powder lines to couloirs or relaxed descents, Senja has the right choice for everyone.

After a fulfilling day on the mountains of Senja, skiers return to cozy accommodation, often traditional Norwegian rorbuer right by the fjord. Here you can reflect on the day with a glass of local aquavit while gazing out over the Arctic Ocean.

On “First Line” chase on the steep island of Senja

In this area of Norway, you will not only find untouched slopes and powder snow at its best, but also the midnight sun, the finest food and fantastic views of the fjords and the sea.

Q&A about ski touring on the island of Senja

Best time for a visit

The best time for ski tours on Senja is from March to May, as this is when the snow and light conditions are best. On our trips, we travel via Tromsø, from where we take a three-and-a-half-hour drive to Hamn i Senja and check into our accommodation.

Can I find suitable runs on the island as a beginner or advanced skier?

Yes, Senja’s varied topography offers ski tours for all levels. Beginners can try their hand at gentler slopes such as Sukkertoppen (456 m), while experienced ski mountaineers can test their limits in the steep couloirs of Istinden (1489 m) or on the exposed ridges of Trolltinden (850 m). Many of these mountains offer powder snow slopes with gradients of up to 40 degrees, which will delight even the most demanding freeriders. We are sure to find the right tour for your abilities, conditions and wishes!

Where do we spend the night on Senja Island?

After a fulfilling day on the mountains of Senja, skiers return to our cozy accommodation, often traditional Norwegian rorbuer right by the fjord. Here we can reflect on the day over a glass of local aquavit while gazing out over the Arctic Ocean. Sharing the day’s experiences with like-minded people, be it the perfect powder snow descent from Grytetippen (1019 m) or the thrill of crossing an exposed ridge on Mefjordtinden (657 m), rounds off the ski touring experience on Senja.

Can marine animals be observed on Senja?

Yes, the ski tours on Senja offer more than just sporting challenges. The chance of spotting marine animals such as orcas or humpback whales, which populate the coastal waters in the winter months, adds an extra dimension to the experience.

What else can you do in the area around Senja?

The Senja and Lyngen Alps offer much more than just first-class ski tours. They offer a holistic Arctic experience that appeals to all the senses. After an exciting day of ski touring, there is still plenty to do:

  • Enjoying the local cuisine with fresh dishes;
  • Relax in a traditional sauna with a view of the fjord;
  • Take an exciting hike through the snowy landscape
  • Experience the midnight sun: From mid-May to the end of July, the sun never sets. We can use this time for a boat trip!
  • Whale watching: Orcas and humpback whales can be observed during the winter months.
  • Visit to the Senja Troll: An 18 meter high troll sculpture with a museum inside.
  • Visiting small fishing villages: we can visit charming places like Husøy or Gryllefjord.
  • Kayaking: We can go kayaking in the quieter fjords.
  • Visit Ånderdalen National Park: Here we will find untouched nature and diverse flora and fauna.
  • Snowshoeing: An alternative to skiing to explore the snow-covered landscape.
Cuisine and delicacies of the region

In the far north of Norway, the extreme climatic conditions and limited availability of agricultural resources in winter influence the local cuisine. Here are some examples of foods that are typically consumed in Norwegian cuisine in winter:

  • Skrei (Arctic cod): A special delicacy is the skrei, a winter cod that returns to the coast of northern Norway to spawn every year from January to April. Its meat is considered particularly tender and tasty.
  • King crab: These huge crabs from the Barents Sea are a local specialty. They are often simply boiled and served with butter and lemon.
  • Cloudberries: These golden berries, which grow in moorland areas, are an Arctic delicacy. They are often used in desserts or as jam.
  • Dried and salted fish: Tørrfisk (stockfish) and klippfisk are traditional methods of preserving fish and are considered a delicacy.
  • Rakfisk: Fermented fish, usually trout, is a traditional Norwegian specialty that can be found in the region.
  • Sami specialties: The indigenous Sami culture influences the local cuisine with dishes such as gáhkko (traditional bread).
  • Fresh seafood: In addition to cod, halibut, haddock, redfish, shrimp and mussels are popular local specialties.
  • Arctic herbs and berries: Wild herbs such as angelica and various types of berries such as lingonberries and blueberries are frequently used in local cuisine.
  • Aquavit: This Scandinavian schnapps, often flavored with caraway or dill, is a popular digestif.
  • Local beers: The Mack Brewery in Tromsø, one of the northernmost breweries in the world, produces various types of beer.
Historical background to ski touring on Senja Island

The history of ski touring in the Lyngen Alps and on the island of Senja is closely interwoven with the general development of skiing in Norway and the development of Arctic regions. Although there is no exact date when ski touring “began” in the Lyngen Alps, we can look at the development in several phases:

  • The use of skis in the region dates back to prehistoric times, when they were used by the indigenous population as a means of transportation.
  • The first documented explorations of the Lyngen Alps probably took place in the late 19th century, when cartographers and adventurers explored the region.
  • In the 1920s and 1930s, when ski mountaineering became popular in Norway, the first targeted ski tours in the Lyngen Alps are also likely to have taken place.
After the Second World War, with improved equipment and accessibility, interest in ski touring in the region increased.
  • In the 1980s and 1990s, the Lyngen Alps began to gain international attention as a ski touring destination.
  • Since the 2000s, the Lyngen Alps and especially the island of Senja have experienced a boom as a destination for ski touring enthusiasts from all over the world.
