3x6000m high-altitude mountaineering around La Paz – The Cordillera Real at its best!

Experience an unforgettable 15-day expedition to the most breathtaking 6000m peaks Bolivia has to offer!

Our journey takes us to the impressive city of La Paz, one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its colors, sounds and smells. In the immediate vicinity of the highest capital in the world (3050m!) is the Cordillera Real, a huge alpine playground that offers an endless amount of exciting alpine activities. From Huayna Potosi to Pico de Austria and Illimani, we climb three exciting peaks and explore the area around La Paz in between ascents.

Our trip offers not only spectacular natural phenomena, but also cultural insights. We immerse ourselves in the unique indigenous culture of this region and visit traditional corners of the city where centuries-old traditions, languages and crafts have been preserved. The crowning glory is a visit to the largest salt pan in the world, the Salar de Uyuni, which lies at 3625 m and extends over 10,000 km².

Our 3x6000m trip to Bolivia is therefore not only a mountaineering trip at its best, but also a challenge with overnight stays in tents on the mountain and exciting insights into the colorful country of Bolivia!

Planned itinerary of the Bolivia mountaineering trip 3x6000m

georgien tag1
Day 1

Bolivia, we’re coming!

Arrival from Zurich or Milan by plane. We are happy to organize an alternative journey if desired. Once we arrive in La Paz, we check into a local accommodation/hotel. We visit the city and the “El Alto” district, which towers over the city and guarantees sweeping views of the Cordillera Real.

La Paz 2
Day  2

Discover the vibrant culture of La Paz

Some might already be feeling the altitude. Because at 3640 m, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world! Reason enough to visit this beautiful city, which is full of colors, sounds and views of the Cordillera Real. From the El Alto district, which can be reached by public cable car, we can see one of the peaks we will climb: the Illimani, which at 6439 m is known as the “mother of the Cordillera Real”.

Bergsteigen Bolivien
Day 3-4

Acclimatization peaks: Pico de Austria, Nido de Condores, Condoriri

Less than two hours’ drive from the capital, the Cordillera Real unfolds. We climb a technical 5000-metre peak or an easier 6000-metre peak and thus begin our acclimatization phase at altitude. Among the possible summit ascents are the Pico de Austria, Condoriri, Nido de Condores or the Pequeno Alpamayo. Depending on the team’s wishes, we can choose the right challenge.

Penas Zongo Pass Bolivien
Day 5

Transfer to the Huayna Potosi base camp or rest day

Depending on our energy levels and the second summit chosen, we make our way to Huayna Potosi base camp, which at 6088 m is the best entry point to the 6000 m altitude class. Alternatively, we return to La Paz or the villages of Penas or Zongo, from where we enjoy a leisurely day to recover from the first ascent.

Huayna Potosi Gipfel
Day 6-9

Ascent of the Huayna Potosi, 6088 m

A wonderful mountain that guarantees views as far as La Paz. The well-serviced huts along the way make it possible to climb this 6000m peak in comfort. The Huayna Potosi is considered an easy 6000m peak and an ideal entry-level mountain in this altitude class. The summit day in particular is long and strenuous, but the view of La Paz at sunrise from the summit is a unique experience and a real treat!

Salar de Uyuni Bolivien
Day 10

Rest day, or rather a sightseeing trip to the Salar de Uyuni or the Titicaca sea?

These were exciting and yet challenging days on the mountain. The 10th day is a day of relaxation in or around La Paz. But we can also visit Lake Titicaca together, or even the Salar de Uyuni salt pan on a longer tour.

bolivien reise uyuni
Day 11

Drive back to La Paz

Today we will have to travel several kilometers by car. We drive back to Uyuni and La Paz on a parallel off-road road.

Illimani La Paz
Day 12-14

Ascent of the Illimani, 6438 m

A drastic change of scenery: from deserts and moon-like landscapes to the megacity of La Paz and back onto the Cordillera Real. As a crowning finale, we climb the Illimani, which with its 6438 m is considered the city’s landmark. This mountain is also known as the “Mother of the Cordillera”. The ascent involves a mixture of overnight stays in huts and tents and is classified as moderately difficult.

La Paz
Day 15

La Paz, buffer day: One last day to explore or to relax

On the last day, we can experience one last special activity: From the El Alto market to the “cholita wrestling” or the witches’ market, to hikes around La Paz, this is a buffer day that we can customize as we wish. In the evening we will have a final dinner together and sleep in the hotel/traditional accommodation.
