Our Pumori expedition is a special adventure for ambitious high-altitude mountaineers. Its majestic peak rises strikingly into the sky and casts its enchanting shadow on Kala Pathar, which lies at 5800 m above sea level. Thanks to its unique shape, the Pumori is easy to recognize and its name, which means “unmarried daughter”, comes from the Sherpa language.

Pumori climb 7161 m – A fascinating rock pyramid towering between Nepal and Tibet

Climbing Pumori in Nepal is an epic journey that takes mountaineers into the fascinating world of high peaks. Pumori is considered the gateway to other majestic peaks, including Everest. With its striking pyramidal shape, the mountain rises proudly in the Khumbu region on the border between Nepal and Tibet, 7161 meters above sea level. Its profile dominates the landscape behind the Kala Pathar (5555 m) and its unique shape makes it easy to recognize and impossible to overlook.

The name “Pumori” means “daughter of Everest” in the Sherpa language, a fitting name for this majestic mountain. In 1962, Gerhard Lenser reached the summit via the south-east face for the first time as part of a German-Swiss team. Since then, the Pumori expedition has been attracting adventurers from all over the world with its well-developed Himalayan trails, untouched landscapes and diverse flora and fauna. As you trek through blossoming rhododendron, pine, birch and magnolia forests, the trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and peaks, including Everest, Lhotse and other famous Himalayan peaks as well as the Tibetan plateau.

There are two main routes to reach the summit of the 7616 meter high Pumori, the most popular of which is the Southeast Ridge route. This classic route takes climbers across the mountain from Pumori Base Camp at 5300 meters above Gorakshep, passing three camps before reaching the summit. The trail begins with an exciting flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and then passes through well-known stages such as Phakding, Namche, Dingboche and Lobuche before finally reaching Gorakshep. From there, the actual ascent to the summit of Pumori begins, an unforgettable adventure for any fit and ambitious high-altitude mountaineer.

Pumori Climb, Nepal

Pumori, also known as the “Daughter of Everest”, is one of the less traveled peaks in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. With an altitude of 7161 m, it is a first-class choice for experienced mountaineers and trekkers looking for the challenge of a summit ascent in this majestic mountain region.

Day 1

Nepal, we’re coming!

Arrival from Zurich or Milan by plane. We are happy to organize an alternative means of transport if required. Once we arrive in Kathmandu, we will get the last of our groceries, explore the city and experience how the locals live their everyday lives.

Day 3

Flight to Lukla, Phakding trekking

After an early start and an early departure from Kathmandu domestic airport, our flight takes 45 minutes to the Everest region of Nepal. The landing in Lukla (2800 m) is spectacular and on arrival we are greeted by our sirdar (guide) and the trekking team. They organize our luggage before we set off. It’s a gentle walk to Phakding (2800 m), another 3 hours north. The trail passes through Lukla, past hotels, stores and airline offices, to the edge of the Lukla plateau, where the trail ends to meet up with the Jiri trail at Chablung. From here the trail follows the Dudh Kosi River north, through the village of Ghat and finally to Phakding, where we will spend the night. If we have time and feel fit, we can hike further along the trail to Jorsale or Monjo if we wish.

Day 4

Phakding to Namchee Bazaar

From Phakding, the trail continues north along the Dudh Kosi valley and runs 100 meters above the river on the west bank. The trail leads us to Jorsale (2810 m), where we enter the Sagarmatha National Park and hand in our trekking permits for inspection. From here we continue on an increasingly steep trail to Namche Bazaar (3440 m), known simply as Namche. On the way, we cross the spectacular suspension bridge high above the mouth of the Bhote Kosi and Dudh Kosi rivers and shortly afterwards catch our first glimpse of Everest, far to the northeast. The road to Namche is steep and long, but eventually we reach the remarkable Sherpa capital, perched high on the slopes and dominated to the east by the mighty massif of Kwangde (6187 m).

Day  5

Namche Bazaar to Phortse Thanga

From Namche, we hike northeast on a direct route towards Everest, climb up the hill to the visitor center and continue on a relatively flat and easy path high above the Dudh Kosi. In front of us we can now see one of the most beautiful mountains in the Khumbu region – Ama Dablam (6856 m) – as well as Everest, which is still far in the distance. At Sanasa we turn off the Everest trail and walk up the hill to the small settlement of Mong, where we stop for lunch. From here the trail descends steadily to Dudh Kosi at Phortse Thanga (3500 m). This is a beautiful riverside settlement and our overnight stop for the night.

Gokyo Tal

Day 6

Phortse Thanga to Tengboche

We continue our journey along the banks of the Imja Khola and make our way to Tengboche (3867m) today. The start of the trek involves a steep climb out of Namche Bazaar to reach the trail. However, once that is overcome, we continue our way along the well-maintained trail and follow a gentle climb to reach the new altitude. After reaching our destination, you will not be disappointed with the amazing village located on a ridge below the imposing north ridge of Kang Taiga. The best part of the trek is that you can see the summit of Mount Everest from almost every part of the trail. After our day’s hike, we will rest at the lodge, which is located near one of Nepal’s most important monasteries and the largest in the Khumbu region.

Gokyo Tal

Day 7

From Tengboche to Dingboche

Determined, we make our way to the seasonal settlement of Dingboche (4350m), passing through the highest of the original permanent settlements in the valley, Pangboche. The hike on this day is a little more challenging as the difference in altitude is greater than on the previous two days. However, hiking amidst the surrounding mountains makes the effort absolutely worthwhile. We spend the night in a lodge in Dingboche.

Gokyo Tal

Day 8

Acclimatization hike to Chukung

Today we will gain some altitude to acclimatize. We start the day with a hike up into the upper Imja Valley along steep and narrow trails to Chukung (4730m), which lies below the towering south face of Lhotse. After adapting to climbing at such high altitudes, we return to Dingboche by the same route to spend a second night at the lodge.

Gokyo Tal

Day 9

Trekking to Lobuche

After leaving Dingboche, our trail leads us downhill to the settlement of Pheriche. The hike along a ridge to Dugla and on to the Khumbu Glacier on this day is one of the most spectacular. We reach Dugla at an altitude of 4595 meters via a small wooden bridge over the Khumbu glacier river after about two hours of trekking from Pheriche. We will have lunch in Dugla before continuing our uphill journey for another hour. During our trek, we will enjoy spectacular views of Mount Pumori and other high peaks west of Everest. We continue our journey until we reach Lobuche, where we will spend the night.

Gokyo Tal

Day 10

Trekking from Lobuche to Pumori base camp

Today we continue to Pumori base camp from Lobuche. Once we reach the base camp, our Sherpa team will quickly set up the base camp and start preparing for the rest of the climb up Mt. Pumori.

Note: Since the trail from Lobuche to Pumori base camp requires only two hours of hiking, those interested can do a day hike or a morning hike for sunrise and mountain views to Kala Patthar at 5545 meters. Kala Patthar is one of the best viewpoints surrounded by gigantic white peaks 360 degrees. The top of the hill offers wonderful, glorious views of Mount Everest (8848 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8481 m), Cho Oyu (8201 m) and many other nearby peaks.

Gokyo Tal

Day 11 – 29

Pumori Climbing period

We will spend many days practicing climbing skills and acclimatizing properly. On the day of the summit push, we will follow the footsteps and instructions of our experienced mountain guides as we tackle many technical climbing sections, fully acclimatized and well equipped with the necessary climbing gear. We climb to the summit of Mount Pumori taking into account the weather conditions. Our arduous journey to the summit of Mt. Pumori will be rewarded with spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Nuptse and a host of other snow-capped peaks in the Khumbu region of Nepal. We will spend as much time as possible on the summit before returning to base camp along the same route we used to reach the summit. Success!

Gokyo Tal

Day 30

Way back to Pangboche

Today we pack up our things and prepare for the return journey. After breakfast, we leave the base camp and start retracing our path along the same trail that leads to Lobuche. Our trail gradually descends from Lobuche as we pass through the settlements of Pheriche and Dingboche on the way back to spend the night in Pangboche.

Gokyo Tal

Day 31

Trekking to Namche Bazaar

We leave Pangboche behind us and begin the descent towards Deboche. Our path then leads through a beautiful pine forest for a while before we arrive in Tyangboche. Our hike then follows a flat path for a while before slowly descending to Phunke Tenga. As we approach Kyangjuma, our trail becomes moderate uphill trekking. From there it is a pleasant trek back to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital. In the evening we can enjoy strolling through the local stores and souvenir stores of Namche Bazaar.

Gokyo Tal

Day 32

Trekking to Lukla

On the last day of our trip, the trail leads us from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. Our path winds through a lush forest of rhododendrons, oaks and pines. We walk along the grassy banks of the Dudh Kosi River, following the ups and downs. We can expect an overall downhill journey to our destination, with a small off-road climb that we will follow to our lodge in Lukla at the end of the day. Final celebration with all team members of the expedition with beer and good food. Overnight stay.

Gokyo Tal

Day 33

Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu

Today we prepare for a scenic early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival at Kathmandu airport, we will be transferred to the hotel. We can rest at the hotel or opt for a guided sightseeing tour to see the places we could not visit on the second day of our vacation.
