Climbing in Kalymnos, Greece – A dream island for climbers with every skill-level

Kalymnos is one of the most spectacular Greek islands in the Aegean Sea and has become one of the world’s most famous climbing destinations in recent decades. The island is part of the Dodecanese group and is located between the islands of Kos and Leros. Its breathtaking scenery, the warm waters of the Aegean Sea and the barren, rocky terrain have made Kalymnos a paradise for climbers. But until the early 80’s, when the first sport climbers had not yet laid eyes on the vast amount of rock, Kalymnos was still a destination of the sponge diving industry, exciting or?

A detailed introduction for climbing enthusiasts is not necessary for Kalymnos. The island is considered one of the hotspots for sport climbing in Greece and all of Europe and for good reason! Kalymnos offers hundreds of climbing gyms and about 4,000 routes in the best, grippy limestone in a very small area, with every orientation, difficulty and approach length. Here you can improve your onsight level, learn the clean climbing in the lead or experience great sport climbing days with a fantastic sea view.

The journey to Kalymnos is usually made through the international airport of Kos. From there we take a ferry that covers the distance of about 30 kilometers between Kos and Kalymnos. The crossing is not only a practical but also a picturesque part of the trip, as you can enjoy the beauty of the Aegean Sea and the approaching island.Once we reach Kalymnos, a wide range of accommodation is available.

Kalymnos is also known as a “limestone paradise”.This because of its impressive limestone rocks that offer perfect conditions for sport climbing. The rocks are of first class quality, well gripped, overhanging or even equipped with “tufas”.There is something for everyone to climb!Another plus point is Kalymnos climate. The island enjoys a sunny climate with mild winters and hot summers. This allows climbers to climb year-round on the island, with spring and fall being especially popular to escape the intense summer heat. The climbing community transforms a beautiful island into a climber’s paradise: The island has a vibrant climbing community and a friendly atmosphere that attracts climbers from all over the world. It is not only a place to climb, but also a place where we will meet like-minded people and share experiences.

However, Kalymnos deserves a visit not only because of the climbing: the breathtaking scenery with picturesque bays, crystal clear waters and traditional Greek villages make this island worth visiting as it is. The island offers the opportunity to relax on the beach after an eventful day of climbing or to enjoy the local cuisine in the cozy tavernas. This is especially delicious and offers fresh seafood and Greek specialties that we will enjoy together in the charming taverns of the island.
