Drytooling requires strength-saving climbing on steeply inclined walls, precise standing on the frontal points of your crampons and plenty of energy. Climbing is done entirely on rock, with the help of ice tools and crampons, just like ice climbing. An exciting mix that prepares you perfectly for the ice climbing season or for challenging combined mountain tours.

Drytooling – Climbing on rock with ice axes

The ’80s mark the origins of modern ice climbing, which are also characterized by the emergence of new materials such as strongly curved picks and crampons with horizontal spikes. However, ice climbing on pure ice formations had lost some of its appeal by the end of the 1990s. In addition, the ice formed less frequently or less well in certain winter seasons. Ice climbers and alpinists were therefore unable to train consistently for their serious alpine projects. An alternative was needed! So they now tried their hand at combined projects that led through rock passages and often transitioned into ice climbing on free-hanging icicles. Mixed climbing was born.

With the turn of the millennium, the art of mixed climbing developed further, so that climbing was only done on dry rock (dry), with ice tools and crampons (tooling). Ice climbers were able to train in the valley on prefabricated walls for their high alpine objectives in order to be fit for extremely difficult mixed climbing or demanding mountain tours in the high alpine.
