Ski touring in East Greenland, an adventure at the end of the world!

Imagine gliding down pristine slopes surrounded by an icy silence broken only by the crunch of snow beneath your skis. In the distance, you can see ice floes gliding calmly across the sea. Colourful houses come into view as the local Inuit go about their daily lives. Perhaps even a distant sighting of a polar bear… East Greenland offers precisely these magical moments – a ski touring paradise far away from civilisation, where you can ski down slopes that no human has ever seen before.

Ski touring in Greenland with mountain guide

Tasiilaq – Your gateway to the Arctic wilderness

Our 10-day adventure begins in Tasiilaq, the largest settlement on Greenland’s wild east coast. With just under 2,000 inhabitants, this small community is surrounded by majestic mountains, glittering glaciers and fjords full of turquoise blue icebergs. Here, where rugged granite peaks rise over 1,000 metres above the frozen King Oscar Fjord, you will find skiing conditions that freeriders and ski tourers can only dream of.

The legendary Red House – your base in the ice

Our accommodation is the famous “Red House” owned by Robert Peroni, a renowned South Tyrolean mountaineer who has been living in Greenland for decades. Peroni, who crossed the Greenland ice cap at its widest point with his companions in 1983, knows this region like no other. His red wooden house is known far beyond Greenland’s borders and offers us warm hospitality in one of the most remote areas on earth.

With dog sleds into the unknown

The adventure begins in the morning when we are awakened by the barking of the sled dogs. These faithful companions of the Inuit take us across the frozen fjord ice to the starting points of the ski tours. We will glide through a landscape so unrealistically beautiful that it could have come straight out of a fairy tale.

A tour lasting several days will first take us to the small settlement of Tiniteqilaaq, which will serve as our base camp for further explorations. From there, we will conquer the surrounding peaks, while in the evenings we will enjoy the silence of the Arctic and, with a little luck, even the dancing northern lights above the fjord.

Top-class ski tours

The mountains around Tasiilaq offer ski tours to suit every taste. From the 1,200-metre-high Sofias, whose descent is one of the most spectacular in the region, to the glaciated peaks along the King Oscar Fjord – here you are guaranteed to find untouched slopes and powder snow unlike anything you will find in the Alps!

The combination of culture and sport is particularly appealing: you immerse yourself in the life of the Inuit, learn about their traditions and enjoy local specialities in the evening – experiences that go far beyond the normal ski touring experience.

A journey to yourself

East Greenland challenges you and rewards you at the same time. The sheer vastness of the landscape, the silence of the Arctic and the encounter with a completely different culture will leave a lasting impression on you. Here, where the nearest road is hundreds of kilometres away and the helicopter is the only connection to the outside world, you will find a peace and clarity that is impossible in hectic everyday life.

The 10-day trip from Reykjavik via Kulusuk to Tasiilaq and back is more than just a skiing holiday – it is an expedition into one of the last untouched wildernesses on earth. You will return home not only with unforgettable skiing experiences, but also with a new perspective on life and nature. Embark on the adventure of a lifetime and discover East Greenland on skis with Exped Tribe – where the world is still wild and free.

Grönland Eisscholle

Planned itinerary for the ski touring trip in eastern Greenland

Kulusuk Flughafen Grönland

Day 1-2

Arrival by plane via Reykjavik, Iceland. Our destination is the Kulusuk Military Airport, where we will be met. We are happy to organise alternative transport if desired (by boat, for example ;)). We will then travel by helicopter to Tassilaq, one of the larger settlements in East Greenland. During the flight, we enjoy the view of the impressive mountain landscape and the snow-white King Oscar Fjord. The Red House team picks us up at the landing site. After arriving at our accommodation, we prepare for the planned ski tours and meet Mr. Robert Peroni himself. The day ends with a dinner together.

Grönland Skitourenreise

Day 3-8

Every day, we will be transported by dog sled to pyramid-shaped mountains and spend the night in a hut with spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of the glacier world.

On Greenland’s east coast, you can expect high-alpine tours with ascents of over 1,000 metres and long, racy descents. The descents take place on untouched slopes, so there is certainly no rush for first lines! Meanwhile, shades of blue shimmer in every direction in the distance. Every now and then, a seal or a whale can be seen in the distance (or even a polar bear, ideally from far away!).

Depending on conditions, we plan further ski tours or cultural insights into the culture of the Inuit. Possible northern lights observation and stories of the ice pioneers are also part of the evening programme and round off this special experience!

Tasiilaq Grönland

Day 9-10

We use the remaining morning hours for a relaxed stroll through the settlement and to purchase souvenirs. At midday, we take a helicopter transfer over the impressive fjord landscape – a final bird’s-eye view of the peaks and glaciers we have visited. From the airfield, the plane takes us back to the Icelandic capital, where we end our stay in the lively city centre. An early transfer to the international airport marks the start of the return journey, with arrival in the afternoon of the same day. Alternatively, there is the option of extending your programme individually: relax in geothermal baths or explore the famous circular route with its natural attractions – geysers, waterfalls and volcanic formations await interested travellers. We are happy to arrange additional activities according to your wishes.

Questions and answers about ski touring in Greenland

Best time for a ski touring trip in Greenland

The best time for ski touring trips to East Greenland is from February to May, with the peak season being from mid-March to mid-May. Our ski touring trips take place in April and May.

Will we see polar bears in Tasiilaq?

Yes, polar bear sightings are quite possible in Tasiilaq and the surrounding area of East Greenland. Greenland’s white giants are regularly sighted, especially in North and East Greenland, where the animals hunt from the sea ice. Sightings are particularly likely during the winter months (February to April) when the sea ice is stable and the bears are actively hunting. The animals follow the ice floes and can also come close to settlements. For this reason, we always carry a large-calibre rifle with us on tours outside the settlement.

What can you do in Greenland when the weather is bad?

When the weather is bad, there are various indoor activities to enjoy in Tasiilaq, although the choice is naturally limited in this small settlement in East Greenland:

  • Ammassalik Museum: The former church in Tasiilaq now houses the local history museum. Here, visitors can see numerous objects from the everyday life of the Inuit in earlier times. Traditional costumes, art objects and masks, tools and hunting equipment are all on display here.
  • Craft demonstrations: Traditional Inuit craft techniques are occasionally demonstrated in the village.
  • Readings about polar history and Inuit culture
  • Snowshoe hikes around the settlement
